Update ListingThe W took the city by storm when it opened in 2003, delivering swanky nightlife beyond the Gaslamp Quarter. Rooms are bright and cheery -- like mod beach cabanas beamed into downtown, replete with a sexy shower. Nouveau nautique is the theme, with elegant aqua and sand tones accenting the whites, a window seat (great idea) for gazing down on this languid corner of downtown, and a beach-ball-shaped pillow, a blunt reminder that this hotel is supposed to be fun. Stayed here for one night in feb 08. having stayed at a number of different w hotels, i'd say this is one of the more 'hip' ones - the lobby is sleek with a prominent bar and lots of neon. there is also a rooftop lounge with heated sand (yes, heated) floor so you can walk around barefoot as if you're downing a corona at the beach.
the room decor is typical w, but the furniture was white, instead of the black you see at many w's. the service was pretty good overall but this hotel does cater to a younger set.
location-wise, it's about 10-15min walk to the gas light district, which is not too bad and just around the corner from the sd museum of modern art.

Great hotel

Nice carl straus around the corner, dinner there, and then back to the hotel, it's a great place with a cool beach theme bar on the roof. it's a little too "upity" for san diego, but, it's where our 1st child was conceived so it gets 4-stars from me.
