Real travelers know—or have learned through sad experience—the code words of the road. So when you hear "Euro-style hotel," you can't help but expect Lonely Planet-toting backpackers or budget-minded families, all willing to forgo private bathrooms for the promise of lower room rates.

But here I am in the breakfast room of San Diego's Hotel Occidental, and I am surrounded by three boomer couples chatting about tee times and dinner reservations, plus a Gen-X husba...

Best kept secret in san diego

Posted by Lucky  from San Diego, CA  on April 11, 2007

If i had to design a perfect budget hotel, i couldnt come up with anything better than the occidental. imy friend and i were thrilled when we saw its lovely exterior in downtown san diego. inside was every bit as impressive. my room was comfortable and clean, a bargain anywhere, but especially in a high price city like san diego. it was impeccably clean and there was no problem using the shared showers which were always cleaned between guests. best of all were the staff, who were outstandingly helpful and pleasant. i've worked on a hotel reception and it can get wearying answering the same questions day after day, but occidental staff responded with enthusiasm to every question. very pleasant to enjoy the free breakfast in the sunny courtyard before setting off to make the most of san diego's charms. nice to come back at the end of a day to smiles and free dvds if you wanted a rest. i explored san diego thoroughly but i'm tempted to go back when i know i can stay there so comfortably and problem free. and next time i'd like to ride one of the free bikes - you had to be up early
