From the State Park service: "The Park is located on the eastern side of San Diego County, with portions extending east into Imperial County and north into Riverside County. It is about a two-hour drive from San Diego, Riverside, and Palm Springs.

Many visitors approach from the east or west via Highways S22 and 78. From the coast, these highways descend from the heights of the Peninsular range of mountains with spectacular views of the great bowl of the Colorado Desert. Highway S2 enters the park from the south off of Interstate 8."

Hot but scenic

Posted by Encinitan  from Encinitas, CA  on July 21, 2008

Check the weather & then take plenty of water on this trip! most people should go in the winter when the weather is very pleasant, but anytime is interesting for the desert nature-lover. if you travel on i-8, stop at the funky desert tower on your way for a great view. kids will enjoy a hike throuugh the painted rocks there too-bring a camera). remember that summer heat of the desert can be life-threatening, so play it safe & have fun!(
