The nearest beach safe for swimming is Pueblo la Playa (also called La Playita), about 3km (2 miles) east of town. From Bulevar Mijares, turn east at the small PUEBLO LA PLAYA sign and follow the dusty dirt road through the cane fields and palms. You'll arrive at a small village and beautiful beach where a number of pangas (skiffs) that belong to local fishermen are pulled ashore. There are no shade palapas.
Estero San José, a nature reserve with at least 270 species of birds, is between Pueblo la Playa and the Hotel Presidente Inter-Continental. The estuary is a protected ecological reserve.
A beach with beautiful rock formations, Playa Palmilla, 8km (5 miles) west of San Jos?, is near the One&Only Palmilla. To reach Playa Palmilla, take a taxi to the road that leads to the Hotel Palmilla grounds, then take the fork to the left (without entering the hotel grounds) and follow signs to Pepe's restaurant on the beach.
Swimming Safety--Although this area is ideal for watersports, occasional strong currents and undertows can make swimming dangerous at Playa Hotelera, the town beach -- check conditions before entering the surf. Swimming is generally safe at Pueblo la Playa, though it, too, occasionally experiences a strong undertow. The safest area beach for swimming is Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas.
