Located down the street from Spago -- so you know it's expensive -- is one of the best steakhouses in Southern California: Mastro's. Typical of an upscale steakhouse, the dimly lit dining room on the first floor has a dark, leathery, serious men's club feel to it, so be sure to request a table on the second floor, where the bar, live music, and cool vibe are located. Slide into a plush black leather booth, order a Mastro Dry Ice Martini (which comes with the shaker, so it ...

Great steak in siberia

Posted by sparksfan  from New York, NY  on April 28, 2008

When you reserve, ask for the main room, or better yet if you are sans enfants, the second floor with bar and music. arriving with my teenagers, accomplished amateurs of the steak, we were relegated to the off to the side "mastro room," something of a siberia. fortunately, the quality of our food, and the genrosity of the portions made up for the venue. steakhouse standard shrinp coctail was enlivened with a bit of dry ice hoopla, the sauce on the sauteed shrimp was worthy of a fine italian restaurant and oysters were plump and briny. the strip steaks were a success in on and off the bone versions, and the on the bone filets were juicy. steamed asparagus needed no hollandaise, and the onion rings were grease-free. i have had better creamed spinach at places like bone's and the strip house, not to mention the place in the wilshire that shall not be named in this review. the generously portioned lobster mashed potatoes were far too rich as an accompnaiment to steak, with fish dishes they might have been dreamy.
we were too full for dessert, smoething that cannot be said about the other top-class la restaurants we tried this week. overall, it compares well with high end steakhouses nationally.
