MOCA is Los Angeles's only institution devoted to art from 1940 to the present. Displaying works in a variety of media, it's strong in works by Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, and Mark Rothko, and shows are often superb. For many experts, MOCA's collections are too spotty to be considered world class, and the conservative museum board blushes when offered controversial shows (they passed on a Whitney exhibit that included photographs by Ro...

Moca is caca

Posted by Westsidefoto  from Los angeles, Ca  on May 7, 2008

My feeling after viewing the modern art collection at moca can be summed up in a single word, "depressing".

much has been written about the architecture by a "famed japanese architect". but, to me, it's just an ordinary building. nothing special, and very forgettable. bland and soleless, like the art collection it houses.

sure, many of modern art's "big names" are represented there. but, i get the distinct feeling that none of those exhibited could be called "seminal" or even "important" works of those particular artists. the works on display give us very little reason to view them, much less marvel in their genius.

as an artist myself, i was hoping to emerge from moca inspired and energized to come back to my studio and jump into some exciting new projects. instead, i came away feeling drained and depressed.

someone needs to tell the emperor he has no clothes.

i had the exact opposite reaction to a modern art collection at the hess winery in napa. the location and building are stunning. the works are inspiring. many of the same "big names" are represented in the hess collection. they seem to have been selected by someone with a better eye for interesting/important pieces. i even discovered a couple artists i had never seen before, my favorite being japanese sculptor katsura funakoshi.

my advice would be to skip moca and head directly to the hess winery collection in napa.
