Scheduled to open shortly after this book went to press, the Vegas version of the Broadway smash (it won a record 12 Tony Awards) receives the same treatment other Great White Way refuges get when they come to Sin City: big cuts to make it run at around 90 minutes with no intermission. The good news is that Mel Brooks and stage (and screen) director Susan Stroman are the ones making the cuts, so the result has a better chance of maintaining the spirit of the original than some other transfers. The story of two down-on-their-luck types who try to make a killing on Broadway by staging the worst musical ever, this is a crowd-pleaser for sure, but one that depends strongly on the skill of its headlining stars. No one can match Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, so despite its enormous success, the transition to Vegas might be a little more bumpy than some of the other, less-star-vehicle Broadway transplants. Show times and ticket prices not announced at press time.
