Site of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games, Squaw is one of the world's finest year-round resorts. Skiing is spread across six peaks with one of the most advanced lift systems on earth, providing access to more 4,000 acres of skiable terrain -- 70% geared toward beginners and intermediates and 30% for the advanced, expert, and/or insane. For nonskiers and skiers alike, High Camp, at the top of the cable car, has the Olympic Ice Pavilion (year-round ice-skating), a swimming lagoon and spa (spring and summer), snow tubing, snowboarding school, restaurants, and bars. Squaw also has an arcade, climbing wall, and Central Park for snowboarders. The Nordic Center (tel. 530/583-6300) has 400 acres of groomed trails for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Squaw also offers free night skiing with the purchase of a full-day lift ticket. Children ages 12 and under ski for only $5.
