A wooden tower. A few stone guard stations. A pale green gymnasium. These few buildings are all that remains of the Manzanar War Relocation Center, where 10,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans were interned during World War II because of their ancestry. When the center closed in 1945, many of the original buildings were sold and moved throughout the Owens Valley and used as apartments, homes, a bar and grill and even a Boy Scout meeting hall. Manzanar is located on the west side of U.S. Highway 395, 9 miles north of Lone Pine and 6 miles south of Independence.

Open Hours: Interpretive Center: Summer hours (April 1 - October 31) 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Winter hours (November 1 - March 31) 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Closed: The 814 acre site is open every day from dawn to dusk. Closed December 25.
