The mauna kea has been re-opened for at least 6 months. the resort is the same, just refreshed. some of the tiny rooms were made larger by reducing the number of rooms. itʻs a lovely place.

Bad info!

Oct06 hawaiian earthquake damages mauna kea beach hotel
Posted by barb from Diablo, CA on March 17, 2007
In july, 2006 i stayed at the mauna kea beach hotel and had a, high floor, 180-degree oceanfront beach view room--sunsets and sunrises were spectacular to watch from the spacious lanai. every evening, again from the lanai, i watched a large group of sting rays swim directly below a easy-to-walk-to rock bluff. the ocean cove was lit by a spotlight pointing into the water. ask for a room where you can take in nightly endless sightings of multitudes of sting rays swimming in the lighted cove right on property. divers and snorkelers were even in the ocean swimming with the sting rays! being an established hotel, mauna kea has the advantage of accrued character and charm--larger rooms and bathrooms, premier beach location and spacious mature landscaped grounds. if you like asian art, you'll be enchanted with the public art on property. unfortunately, due to the october 15, 2006 hawaii earthquake, the mauna kea beach hotel is closed for repairs. watch for its reopening oct-nov, 2008---yes, 08...the earthquake occured out in the ocean near the mauna kea (vs in the mountains), so there are extensive repairs that have to be completed.

The review really has it right. the hotel is cool, but in kind of a retro james bond sort of way. the beach is the best i saw on that shore of the big island.
