This fabulous resort, which had begun to fall into disrepair in the past few years, was recently sold (to computer magnate Michael Dell) and it appears that the new owners are pouring some much-needed funds into maintenance of this oceanside Polynesian village. Since 1965, those seeking a great escape have crossed the black-lava fields to find refuge at this exclusive, one-of-a-kind haven by the sea with its wonderful dark-sand beach. Yes, the blissful languor still settle...

If this is your thing, wait for the remodle

Posted by Neeter Lou  from Waikoloa, HI  on September 29, 2009

They plan to close this place down for a while next year to update the "infrastructure". iʻm pretty sure they mean plumbing and electricity.

we stayed there earlier this year. the "meandering pathways" are dusty roads and the "bungalows" are cabins.

there is scant staffing, except of the kind that hustle for tips. if you need something the only way to reach the front desk. when checkout day came, we had to call by cell phone to get them to come get us and our bags. they actually think you are going to hike up there towing your suitcase behind you on a dusty road.

sorry to be a downer, i know people donʻt like it. i am fortunate to live within a few miles of this place, and the other resorts on the kohala coast. we always want our visitors to be happy and enjoying their experiece here.

the food was good.

if you love camping and paying fantastically high prices for it, youʻll be a "happy camper."

The best vacation ever....

Posted by Hawaii Guy  from Ventura, CA  on March 26, 2009

The kona village is unlike anyplace in the islands. it is laid back so relaxing is optimized. it is so friendly you feel you have known the other guests and employees forever.

with no tvs or telephones to drive you nuts, the experience you leave with is like no other.

i am addicted to this place.
