This jewel in the Sheraton crown, a palace full of marble and chandeliers is scheduled to undergo massive interior renovation in 2008, then reopen in January 2009 as a St. Regis property (with new pool and a spa on property). No matter how fabulous they make the interior (and St. Regis properties are always superb), the location still enjoys one of the world's finest settings, between Hanalei Bay and Kauai's steepled mountains. Nearby are outstanding surfing and windsurfin...

Spectacular? no doubt. good-value? your call....

Posted by chowhound  from Los Angeles, CA  on June 23, 2007

the royalty-worthy setting is unimpeachable, no doubt. (the russians installed a short-lived fortress here.) you hardly need to squint to imagine shangri-la outside your lanai here. the golfing is sublime, world-class and tiger woods-worthy.

the only question is: do you enjoy being heremtically sealed in your resort/room, with every wish executed as your command...or, do you prefer to get out, explore, sweat a bit and experience the true kauai aloha spirit?

if you sway towards the latter, i'd suggest investigating the numerous property rental options nearby, around hanalei (inspiration for puff the magic dragon?) and environs. if you don't stay here, the friday night seafood buffet is worth a special trip.

Truly amazing place

Posted by hsleeny  from Irvine, CA  on February 26, 2007

stayed here for 1 night with my wife may 2006. we used our spg points (since ocean view rooms can be $500 plus). yes, the rooms a just a bit dated for the price you pay but oh my, what a view. (check out the photo of our view i've uploaded above).

there are likely nicer hotels on kauai room-wise, but you will never forget the view of hanalea bay. unforgettable.
