Smith's operates a 157-passenger motorized barge that takes people up and downriver on a hour and 20 minute cruise with a hula show on the return trip. At the Fern Grotto landing, you get off the boat and walk through the rainforest to the lush Fern Grotto, the source of many Hawaiian legends and a popular site for weddings.

As of late june '07, the grotto was closed to all non-motorized boats since there's nowhere for them to dock without eroding the river bank. supposedly the state has been working for 3 years to build a proper dock for self-propelled paddlers, but for now the only option is to join one of the monopoly boat tours (call to confirm that the grotto has re-opened before plunking down your hard-earned cash).
