Backcountry hikers beware
Posted by Hiker-B from SF Bay Area, CA on January 18, 2009
This reviewer is an outdoors enthusiast and career geologist, with decades of work and travel experience in parks and wildernesses, in all seasons. in 2007 my second south rim multi-day hike proved two major points: 1., the park's backcountry office blithely rubberstamps hike permits and blindly offers "information" without regard to it's immediate applicability or suitability to hike planning; and 2., the park's backcountry rangers include reprehensibly unprofessional incompetents that sadistically and aggressively excerbate the hiker's necessary business with park administration. any would-be backcountry hiker in the gcnp will be ill-served to plan and act solely as guided by gcnp information and administration. the gcnp has countenanced a terrible degradation of its ranger staff and administration to the point that it's not so much the hike factors (exertion, heat, drought, rattlesnakes) that endanger the visitor, but the park staff. as regards gcnp administration, assume nothing, trust nothing, and plan for its disfunctionality.

Simply awesome!

My husband and i spent 2 nights of our honeymoon at the el tovar hotel on the south rim of the grand canyon. waking up was such an awesome, awe inspiring experience. it's beauty is something you have to experience for yourself. i want my ashes spread there when i pass on.
