There’s been a lot of buzz about the best paid job in the world, a six-month stint as a caretaker on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef. And now, we have news of the world’s best internship…if you’re the traveling type, that is.
Student travel organization STA Travel has started a search for its 2009 World Traveler Interns, who will be sent on a fully paid trip with a diverse itinerary. The two selected “interns” (and I put that in quotes this one time, only because it sounds like no internship I’ve ever heard of, but maybe I’m just jealous) will begin their journey in Fiji, where they will spend two weeks relaxing as well as volunteering at a local school.
From there, they take in Australia, India, Kenya and Tanzania. Then Europe beckons, with stops in Germany, Poland, Denmark and Russia. Crowning the adventure will be a backpacking trip in Scotland and a tour of Ireland.
Participants will document their wanderings and post videos and photos through a blog along the way, according to a press release about the contest.
So, how does one sign up? Well, first off, sit down, old fogies (that includes me), this is for those age 26 and younger, though you don’t have to be a student to apply. The YouTube video here gives an overview of the process, which includes posting a video response on an online video-sharing site, like YouTube; see this page to get started.
Popularity among other viewers will determine the top 20 applicants, who will undergo phone interviews with judges. The top 10 candidates will then be asked to take judges on a tour of their hometown via a video. The two judged to be the best win this internship of, excuse the cliché, a lifetime.

I’ve always said I wouldn’t be 20 again if you paid me, but I think I just changed my mind. What a great opportunity for some young traveler!

They have a cool micro site too where you can sign up and get more information. I tried last year and didn’t make the cut hopefully it will be this year!

I’m 28 so I guess I won’t be qualifying for this one then. Sounds like a great opportunity for any keen traveller. I guess this concept for PR stunts could soon get old new but’s it’s worked pretty well for the Island job in Australia and this so far so expect more to come.
