Will Spirit Air downsize? American Airlines makes emergency landing; can Palmdale airport succeed?

American Airlines

Good morning travelers! Lets call it a doughnut day today. I feel like having a treat. As for the news today, it’s a mixed bag.

Airline news | A window on an American Airlines MD-80 broke 20 minutes after take-off and disabled an engine. The pilot made an emergency landing back at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport where it departed from. None of the 132 passengers was hurt and no pressure was lost in the cabin.

Spirit Airlines, known for their persistent super-low airfare sales and $9 Fare Club, is the center of the airline rumor mill Tuesday. There were media reports that Spirit Air was closing hubs in New York and Puerto Rico with downsizing in Fort Lauderdale and cutting staff in Detroit.

But so far the only press release on the Spirit website stated, “What we have done in order to comply with the WARN Act, is to notify labor representatives of flight crews of possible reductions that could be implemented if we continue to see unprecedented fuel price levels,” said Ben Baldanza, the Spirit CEO. I guess we’ll have to wait for more official word to come out regarding any possible closures.

The Cranky Flier says that the new passenger service at Palmdale Airport is having difficulty filling flights. Have you used the Palmdale airport? Do you think more flights per day would make the airport more attractive?

I would inspired Spiritair to continue to fly to Puerto Rico, this is a very good market and given the latest info on AA intention withdrawing from the mco route.Spirtair would do fine. A very high volume of local customer enjoy flying to orlando,In my view is a very good business decision I am a fomer TWA employee and we handle a very high volume on the MCO and JFK route. I’m fully awared of the tuff times the industry is undergoing, but with alittle bit of strategy and adjustments we’ll get by these crisis. thank you.

from my sources Spirit is laying off. They have cancelled all ongoing and future training classes and Flight attendants and pilots have already been told that those being affected by the furlough will be effective august 1

  3. Jessica Says:

The Spirit customer service line is totally disabled as of 6/5. I’ve been calling all morning to dispute a duplicate charge, and all extensions are going straight to a busy signal.
