Which weekend is the cheapest to travel? Kayak says…

Kayak.com logoNews tip: If only travel websites could find out when other travel websites are planning to launch new features, then the guy with less PR muscle wouldn’t get lost. As you know, Farecast made a big splash this week with their new hotel search tool. I even saw it on the local TV news in San Diego. But did you know that Kayak.com also launched a new search feature?

Kayak’s new weekend search tool hardly got any face time compared to the Farecast hotel launch, but you’ll want to bookmark it a tout de suite. Now, if you’re not sure which weekend you want to travel on, just check with Kayak.com to find out which weekend in cheaper.

How to use the weekend search tool:
1. Key in your departure and destination cities
2. Select the month of weekends you want to search
3. Select the days and times you want to travel. Default is Friday – Sunday
4. Analyze the results: Look at the gray line of dates. Kayak puts the cheapest flights on top, but you have to read what weekend it is. The chart in the left nav bar makes it even easier to compare prices and dates.

For example: I did a search for Los Angeles to New York City and found that a round-trip flight the weekend of October 5, 2007 was more than $100 cheaper than going the weekend of October 18.

Caveat: So far this feature is only good for flights, but we can’t wait for it to incorporate hotels and flight + hotel packages, too.
