It will add nearly $10,000 to the price of your cruise, but if you fantasize about visiting Antarctica — the coldest, windiest and least populated continent on the planet — Crystal Cruises has a deal for you.
The Extreme Overnight Adventure in Antarctica, as it’s called, is one of the most expensive shore excursions ever offered. It costs more than the 19-day cruise itself, which is priced from $8,995 per person, double occupancy.
But a hardy (and wealthy) band of six passengers can get a two-day taste of Antarctica’s terrain and wildlife. They’ll visit a king penguin colony, see elephant seals and fur seals and spend a night at the Chilean Antarctic Institute. They’ll also brave below-freezing temperatures to trek to remote villages, visit a petrified arctic forest and travel by helicopter to a humpback whale sanctuary.
Crystal Cruises spokesman John Stoll calls it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The excursion will be offered during Crystal Symphony’s Christmas-New Year’s cruise, departing Dec. 20 from Buenos Aires. Participants will travel by plane from Ushuaia, Argentina, and rejoin the ship in Punta Arenas, Chile.
Prices for the Extreme Overnight Adventure start at $9,774 per person, double occupancy.

Um. Do you really think you’re going to get people to pay $10,000 a day to freeze, get fat and pet penguins? In this economy?
Good luck.
Can you say “Demographics” and “Ression.”

I’m confuse, is it $9,774 per night person?

If they can get someone to pay $9774 per night, then P.T. Barum was right: “there’s a sucker born every minute.”

The worst deal ever!

“trek to remote villages”?
There are no villages in Antarctica - only scientific outposts and I don’t think any are in trekking distance of the Chilean base.

It’s a Crystal Cruise…there will likely be a wait list for it. Don’t let your readers confuse Crystal with Carnival cruises. A Crystal Cruise is like a fine wine, where as Carnival isn’t just two buck chuck, it’s also hitting up the cheapest tequila and collecting bud light bottle caps (and turning them into toddler playtoys…which I’ve unfortunately seen).

Travelers wishing to spend the night on the Antarctic continent can do so for as little as $195 per person. A number of small ship expedition cruises aboard specially outfitted ships carrying only 48-120 passengers offer free daily shore landings and optional kayaking, mountaineering, cross country skiing SCUBA diving and overnight camping. Camping may be a little rougher than the Chilean Institute, but the price is right.
