Roundup: Virgin America flights on sale too; Spirit’s $8 flight sale for members; Priceline joins Twitter

Good morning, travelers. Did you see the airlines sales yesterday? If you were waiting for other airlines like Virgin America to put their flights on sale, the time is here.

Airline sales | Virgin America is offering one-way flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) starting at $47 (April). That’s more than Southwest’s $39 fare, but I saw VA fares in March for $49 any day of the week. To travel on a Friday in March, SWA also charged $49 each way, pre-tax. The SWA $39 fares are for travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

It’s for sure a week full of travel deals. Spirit Airlines has an $8 sale going on. Yeah, yeah —  they always have ridiculously low-fare sales that barely touch the West Coast, but if you have miles to get yourself to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), you’ll find $8 one-way flights to Colombia, Bahamas, Jamaica (pictured) and the Dominican Republic. To get the $8 fares, you need to be a member of Spirit’s $9 Fare Club ($40 annual fee). Otherwise, the nonmember sale fares are $17 each way, pre-tax. So, at the nonmember fare, a round-trip flight between Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Kingston Jamaica (KIN) April 17-24 was $136 after taxes. Flights to Jamaica out of LAX started at $461 that week. So, if you could get yourself to FLL on miles, that’s a steep savings. If you bought yourself a ticket from LAX to FLL to catch that sale flight, it’d be about $220, excluding the overnight hotel fees.

Travel Twittersphere | Priceline’s Brian Ek recently joined the Twittersphere as @TravelEkspert. Today he led us to his blog post of PriceBreakers deals. I then looked at the main Pricebreakers deal page to see all the deals and found Puerto Vallarta resorts half off this month. Use the Name Your Own Price feature to get a resort for $75 a night, double occupancy, plus taxes and fees, for stays March 9-31, 2009.
