A landmark exhibition of the works of the early Renaissance Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516) opened at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome on Sept. 30.
The first major Bellini retrospective since 1949, it gathers 70 masterpieces from all over the world, including the hauntingly beautiful “Presentation of Jesus at the Temple” (circa 1470) from the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, and the captivating “Baptism of Christ” (circa 1500) from the Church of Santa Corona in Vicenza.
Long-lived and prodigiously productive, Bellini was one of La Serenissima’s favorite sons, known for his painstaking realism, gentle coloration and idiosyncratic composition.
The retrospective runs through Jan. 11, 2009, and occupies an dramatically lighted exhibition space in a building that once served as the stables for a papal palace.
