The $6.5-million Tony Hawk’s Big Spin rotating roller coaster debuts Memorial Day weekend at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom with a series of skateboard-themed events.
The three-day launch, May 23-25, includes (days and times vary):
* Professional and amateur skateboarder exhibitions
* Break-dancing performances
* Skateboard lessons and deck assembly demonstrations
* Hands-on disc jockey workshops
* Graffiti art displays and chalk-based clinics
The two-minute-long family coaster features a modest 27-foot drop, a top speed of 31 mph and no inversions, according to Roller Coaster Database.
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s photo blog tracks progress on the spinning coaster, with vertical construction well underway. YouTube video shows an animated model of Tony Hawk’s Big Spin and offers viewers a POV ride.
Timed to coincide with the opening of Tony Hawk’s Big Spin, the Vallejo amusement park-marine park-zoo will also open a skateboard park featuring a slalom course, jumps and ramps (included with the price of admission).
