The 12 books of Christmas: ‘Dream Destinations’

Life Books Dream Destinations

This year, it seems as though we have more gorgeous travel books than ever. I’d like to share my dozen favorites for the next few days, sort of the 12 days of, well, whatever you’re celebrating.

First up: “Dream Destinations: 100 of the World’s Best Vacations” (Life Books, $29.95). You want to make a traveler swoon? These drop-dead photos are categorized into trips for families, for culture vultures, for sightseers, for sporty types, for history buffs, for romantics. Who could not look at Snowdonia, Wales, or the Snake River in Idaho and not want to be there right now?

Some of the destinations are expected (we couldn’t really have a book that talks about culture without the Sydney Opera House, could we?), but others are refreshingly out of left field (Transylvania, space and Memphis, Tenn.).

Half the fun is seeing whether you’ve been there; the other half is seeing whether you’d want to go.
