Swine flu travel warning lifted for Mexico

Beach in Cancun
The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC,  Friday lifted its recommendation that U.S. citizens avoid nonessential travel to Mexico because of the swine flu outbreak there, and the U.S. State Department followed suit. Cruise and tour operators wasted no time trumpeting the news, although port calls may not resume immediately.

In lifting its warning, the CDC said, “There is evidence that the Mexican outbreak is slowing down in many cities though not all.” It also said that the “risk of severe disease” from the H1N1 virus “now appears to be less than originally thought.”

Carnival Cruise Lines said it would resume Mexico port calls for ships departing May 28 and later from Mobile, Alabama, and June 19 and later from Los Angeles. The full list is on its website.

Even though it lifted its travel warning, the CDC said people with a high risk for flu complications, such as young children and the elderly or those with chronic lung or heart disorders, “may want to consider postponing travel” to Mexico. And all travelers, it said, should regularly wash their hands, avoid close contact with sick people and take other precautions to avoid infection.

Anyone know what resort is shown in this photo? I think it is Cancun but I am not sure. It pertains to the all clear for travel in Mexico article.

  2. Insidemex.com Says:

@RG The resort in the picture is the NH Hotel in Cancun…weirdly I was looking at that exact spot from the same elevation a couple of weeks ago.

It seems a nice hotel and they had just opened a new tower of new hotel rooms when the swine flu hit, forcing them to close it until business picks up.

Note, the beach in the picture is no longer there (well, no where near as large) after Hurricane Wilma swept it away.

If you hold your cursor over the picture it says Beach in Cancun.

  4. Chuck Says:

Does anyone know if any countries are currently refusing entry to people who have been to Mexico? I need to travel to about 20 countries this fall and am concerned that a trip to Mexico near the beginning of that odyssey might cause problems later on.

  5. How To Prevent Flu Says:

I think people now are more concerned about traveling to the United Kingdom - more recently, swine flu cases have been appearing there, despite the fact that they may have initially appeared in Mexico.
