Hey Mom and Dad, don’t give up on your dreams of being a rock star. There’s an adults-only summer camp in Cleveland, Ohio at the Rock and Roll Music Hall of Fame. When your kids tell you they want to go to Camp Jam, tell them it’s fine—but you’re going, too.
Deal: Camp Jam gives parents $500 off their tuition at Camp Jam’s Ultimate Rock ‘N’ Roll Get-A-Way for Adults (Oct. 24 – 27) when their kids attend Camp Jam OC or Camp Jam LA this summer. Another way of looking at it is that one kid’s camp is free when mom or dad attend the adults-only rock camp in Cleveland ($5,500 $5,000).
Why Go: This is the first year that Camp Jam brings their mantra “No canoes, lots of rock” to Southern California, with locations in Orange County and Los Angeles. The camps offer full days of instruction from legendary rock musicians, songwriters, A&R reps and industry veterans. They welcome kids of all levels that have a minimum of six months experience. The camps are broken into two sets, one for kids age 7-10 and another for kids 11-17. They learn everything from how to “capture” an audience to honing their chops and performing as a band on stage.
Critique: Camp Jam appreciates the roots of rock n’ roll and tries to give the kids some background in this history. As a result, the list of guest performers and rockers are mostly legends from the Classic Rock era. Kids looking to meet their favorite band that’s currently on an alternative rock station might not see the names they’re hoping for.
