Got a thirst for adventure and motivation to help the ocean environment? Coastal CODE (Clean Oceans Depend on Everyone), a nonprofit founded by Alaskan Brewing Co., is soliciting applications for a short gig that could get you exploring the Alaskan outdoors this fall.
To be considered, you must wow the organizers with your answer to this question: “What is your dream project to maintain a healthier coastline?” Your succinct response — limited to 140 characters — can be entered on the organization’s website, on its Facebook page or via Twitter.
Among finalists asked to submit an application, four people will be picked to join the weeklong Alaskan adventure, departing Sept. 14, 2009, and hosted by Alaskan Brewing Co., Alaska Airlines and Wend magazine. During the trip, participants will learn all about the negative impacts of marine debris on the ocean environment. In addition to leading a beach clean-up in Alaska during the trip, winners will gain knowledge that will help them enact change along their local coasts.
“We cleaned up two and a half tons of debris over a two-mile stretch last year,” saidĀ Alaskan Brewing Co. Communications Manager Ashley Johnston, referring to a beach clean-up in Alaska during last year’s inaugural expedition.
Other activities during the trip will include surfing in Yakutat, sustainable fishing, visits to fish hatcheries, a zip-line tour and whale watching.
The successful applicants will receive airfare, travel costs and all meals among their covered expenses, according to the event organizers. Technically, if you are selected, you are being hired as a Coastal CODE Keeper, but the monetary value of the Expedition comes to approximately $3,000 per person, said Johnston.
Deadline: July 1, 2009
Caveat: You must be a U.S. resident at least 21 years old to be considered.

This is an awesome opportunity to enjoy The Last Frontier and learn how you can make a difference in helping your environment. I was one of the chosen four last year and this was an experience I will never forget. Are you an activist, surfer, water lover and want to do something positive? Check this out…I’ll tell you what, it was so worth it. A special thanks to the Coastal Code and Alaskan Brewing Crew for all you did for us last year! We all had an amazing time!

This trip sounds amazing! It’s the perfect opportunity to have a crazy adventure while doing something that actually matters. Isn’t it nice when social consciousness and fun collide?!

Do you want our whales to disappear? Do you want fish to disappear? Do you want rivers that feed the ocean to dry up? Do you want discharges from cruise ships and oil spills from a variety of vessels to destroy life in the oceans?
Hunters are destroying our whale population while pollution from golf courses, farming, and booming and uncontrolled population growth import too much unavailable water to the coastline. Discharges and other pollution from irresponsible companies kill wildlife that depend on our ocean.
I want to help. I was a founding board member of a California coastal land trust. I helped move a California’s coastal town’s politics from over development to controlled growth.
This trip will further educate me and give me ideas for my future activism.
Thank you for the opportunity to submit this comment.
