Still space on Disney’s new L.A.-Mexico cruises

Disney Cruise Lines

On May 25, Disney began its first season of summer sailings from Los Angeles in three years. But you haven’t missed the boat on the seven-day Mexican Riviera trips. There are 11 sailings left.

“There is a misconception that we’re sold out for the entire season,” Jason Lasecki, spokesman for the line, told me. In fact, he said, most of the Disney Magic’s sailings have openings. You’ll find the widest choice on cruises departing July 6, 13 and 20, he added.

Officially, cruise-only fares start at $1,449 per person for Category 12 inside cabins. But on the line’s website, I found a fare of $1,327 per person, double occupancy (without insurance or ground transportation) on the June 8 sailing.

The round-trip cruises, visiting Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, have a Latin twist. Children’s activities include making churros and piñatas. In Mazatlan, the sail-away celebration is dubbed “Minnie’s Fiesta Grande.” Who knew the Mouse and his mate were so multi-culti?

Shore excursions, at extra cost, feature a waterfall and hot springs in Cabo San Lucas and a “secluded oasis” in Puerto Vallarta, reached by private speedboat. The Puerto Vallarta trip costs a total of $2,350 for up to eight people, Lasecki said.

On Aug. 17, the Disney Magic heads back to its home base, Port Canaveral, Fla.
