Don’t let the chilly weather and gray skies bum you out – score a deal and hit the road. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines are having spring airfare sales right now. If you’re able to plan for next month, consider a midweek getaway for Valentine’s Day or make plans for a long weekend wrapped around Presidents Day weekend. The Southwest sale is good for travel only through February, but Alaska has low fares through the first week in May.
Southwest: Flights start at $44 each way if you book with seven days’ advance notice. Sample fares: Los Angeles (LAX) to Oakland, $49; Albuquerque, $79; San Francisco, $44; Tucson, $74; Seattle/Tacoma (SEA), $89. Taxes and fees are additional.
When: Book by Jan. 24 for travel Jan. 29 through Feb. 29, 2008.
Alaska Airlines: Spring fares are as low as $49 each way before taxes with 14-day advance purchase. I like this sale because there are smaller cities and even flights to Mexico available. For example, if you’re going to the Northern California wine country, fly to Santa Rosa instead of Oakland or San Francisco. Los Angeles to Santa Rosa (STS), $69; to Boise (BOI), $99; Bend, Ore. (RDM), $144; to Cabo San Lucas (SJD), $99; Cancun, Mexico (CUN), $110; Zihuatanejo, Mexico (ZIH), $119. There are lots of destinations to choose from. All taxes and fees are additional.
When: Purchase your tickets by Jan. 31 for travel through May 8, 2008. Blackout dates apply.
