Southwest summer airfares are ripe for the picking

Now that school’s out, you might have more time as a family to take advantage of lower midweek airfares. Southwest gets this and has put on a “School’s Out Summer Sale.” Book 14 days in advance and travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday to get the lowest Web-only fares.

Don’t worry about what airport to depart from, the one-way fares within California are the same whether you leave from Burbank (BUR) or Los Angeles (LAX). If you’re traveling to Reno/Tahoe, it’s $24 cheaper to fly out of BUR than LAX.

Deal: The lowest priced fares are $52 each way within California plus Las Vegas and Phoenix if you travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I tested Burbank (BUR) to Las Vegas (LAS), July 8-12. Flying out on a Tuesday was $52 as advertised, but flying back on a Friday or Saturday was only $9 more each way. The total round-trip price came to $133 after taxes and fees.
