Southern California skiing: Mountain High poised to open

Keep your eye on Mountain High in the Angeles National Forest, which may be opening Saturday.

The popular SoCal ski resort has been taking advantage of strong snow-making conditions and will make the call by 6 a.m. Saturday and post the decision on its website by 7 a.m.

An “inversion” has made the snow-making better at the bottom of the mountain than at the summit, so the lower runs are getting the most carpet: Easy Rider chairlift at Mountain High East, servicing a beginner run, and a collection of rails from Faultline Terrain Park.

If the resort opens, there would also be a DJ and barbecue at the base of the lift, according to spokesperson Laura Johnson.

Snow-making is also going on at the West resort. But keep checking the website, because the opening all depends on the kind of night they have — the colder and drier the better.

Once open, Mountain High plans to offer early season lift tickets for $25 (eight hours).
