Some airlines are trying to help customers stuck with tickets on low-fare carrier ATA, which shut operations and filed for bankruptcy protection this week.
Note that current policies from the airlines, listed below, have restrictions and their policies may change without notice. Note too that these airlines may not be able to help all ticket holders. So visit the website or call the airlines to see whether you can take advantage of some of these remedies.
Northwest Airlines: On its website, Northwest says ATA customers and employees may fly stand-by ($100 fee per segment for those who get on) or book a confirmed seat ($200 per flight segment each way) to or from Hawaii and Cancun, Mexico. This offer is good through May 3, 2008. Info: (800) 225-2525.
US Airways: On its website, US Airways says ticketed ATA customers may travel stand-by for a $100 fare (plus taxes and fees) per nonstop segment to and from Honolulu and other points in Hawaii as well as the Mexican cities of Cancun and Guadalajara. The airline warns that space is very limited. Travel must be completed by April 10. Info: (800) 428-4322.
Delta Airlines: On its website, Delta says it will allow travelers with confirmed tickets on certain ATA flights to Hawaii and Mexico to travel stand-by for $100 (plus taxes and fees) per nonstop segment on coach through the month of April. Passengers also may purchase confirmed-space tickets at a 20% discount on lowest walk-up fares. Info: (800) 221-1212.
Southwest Airlines: On its website, Southwest, which was a code-sharing partner with ATA, says it will rebook customers with Southwest tickets who had an ATA segment of their trip with an itinerary closest to their original travel plans. Travelers also are offered a full refund for unused portions of the ticket. Southwest is in the process of contacting passengers with ATA segments to their tickets who have made reservations through Aug. 22. Call: (800) 308-5037.

This is great except in the age of internet bookings and e-tickets no physical ticket means no help. My printed itinerary and conformation number got me nowhere.

I can not believe that how some one can close doors taking people’s money. How stupid is judicial system allowing that. If airline collected monies, goverment should make sure Airline should fly these passangers till dates committed or make an alternate arrangement with other airline for same schedule for tkt being issued & payment collected. seems whole system is turning to worst, seems pretty soon we will be worst than any 3rd world country. At least 3rd world countries do not have infrastructure or have corrupt govenment which every one knows. while here in our pround USA, we are being slapped on face legally & no one can do anything. just think who is worst???????

I am in shock - I booked on ATA tuesday april 1 to depart april 3rd to chicago to attend my son’s military graduation, and to find out on april 3 early morning driving to work listening to the radio,it announced that ATA filed for chapter 11 and all fights were cancelled. It is so important for for us to attend my sons graduation, that from 6am that day, I called every airline I could think of and finally one suggested that I call Southwest, because they are the sister airline. I did call but was first offered a rate so out my reach and the fare offered was 4 times more than my original ATA fare. I pleded with Southwest rep to offer a fare as close as possible to my original ATA fare and finally on the phone with them for about 30mins, I was finally offered a rate that can meet my budget for 3 passengers. ATA tickets were prepaid and when I had to book with Southwest I had to pay again for roudtrip tickets for a party of 3. ATA should refund every passenge they stranded without any notice. I am still in disbelief this has happen. thanks for listening.
