New York may be the city that never sleeps, but Las Vegas gets my vote.
By day, I enjoyed my stay last week at Hilton Grand Vacations Club on the Las Vegas Strip, a clean-looking, classy place that bills itself as a “nongaming hotel.” No slot machines visually shouting at you, just a serene, pleasant lobby and quiet, business-minded guests.
By night, I tossed and turned in my beautifully appointed junior studio — booked through Expedia for $75 a night — wondering why I couldn’t stay asleep.
The answer, and it took me until the second night of my two-night stay to figure this out, was the Fontainebleau — the new $2.9-billion mega-resort that’s on track to open late this year.
The hotel is under construction 24/7 across the street. Yes, round-the-clock bulldozing with warning beeps every time a digger backs up. This in a city where seemingly every other construction site is at a standstill, their giant cranes reaching out to nowhere.
Check out “Las Vegas Undressed” to see early photos of the construction surrounding the new hotel.
Mercifully, the Fontainebleau is shooting for a fall opening and then perhaps one can actually sleep on that side of Hilton Grand Vacations.
In the meantime, request a room on the away side.
Also worth noting: Until the project is completed, there are a dearth of places to eat within walking distance of Hilton Grand Vacations.
