Sierra Nevada lodges from under $100/night

Yosemite photo galleryAct now and make an escape to the Sierra Nevada during the fall shoulder season, when accommodation rates at lodges both inside and nearby national parks drop significantly. Rates will skyrocket again during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, but if you can get away before then, you’ll save money.

Deal: Near the Giant Forest inside Sequoia National Park, the upscale Wuksachi Lodge is offering standard and more spacious deluxe rooms from $97.90/double per night, including tax. AAA members get an additional $10 off. This rate is valid for weekday and weekend stays. I found plenty of availability from now through Christmas, but make sure you book far enough in advance (recommended minimum of 2 weeks) for the cheapest rates.

On Highway 120 just outside the west entrance to Yosemite National Park in Groveland, California, the Evergreen Lodge is a rustic mountain resort offering cozy guest cabins equipped with private decks, satellite radio, TVs with DVD players, and comfy beds. Hotwire’s TravelTicker alerted me to a special deal this fall, with traditional cabins starting at $79/$119 per night for weeknight/weekend stays, excluding taxes. That’s about a 20% discount on the lodge’s typical off-season rates.

Have you found better deals this fall on the eastern side of the Sierra? Let us know about them.

When: The TravelTicker deal is valid (subject to availability) for stays between October 29 and December 22, 2007. Use code TTS07F when making a reservation request online, or call the lodge and simply ask for the TravelTicker special. You must book this deal by 11:59 p.m. on November 6, 2007.

Why Go: Imagine Yosemite Valley and groves of giant Sequoia trees, but without the crowds.

Why Not: Some roads and facilities in the Sierra will shut down soon (e.g., the road to Mineral King in Sequoia National Park closes November 1, while Tioga Pass in Yosemite’s high country usually closes before Thanksgiving).

Connect: The Wuksachi Lodge offers free wireless high-speed Internet access in all guest rooms. The Evergreen Lodge does not offer Internet access in guest cabins, although complimentary shared Wi-Fi is available in the recreation building.
