San Francisco’s LEED-certified Orchard Garden Hotel was ranked No. 2 (after Camp Denali, Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska) in the recently published National Geographic Green Guide list of “7 U.S. Eco-Travel Destinations.”
At the hotel, organic products are used for cleaning; the toilets and faucets are low-flow; draperies, shower curtains and other fabrics are made with recycled textiles (even the carpets include recycled matter); rooms hold recycling bins; and the hotel has implemented a special energy-control system for its key cards.
Rates are around $279 and up per night (pre-tax). The hotel and its guest rooms are equipped with wireless Internet, and rooms also include iPod docking stations.
Tip: Once in San Francisco — whether you’ve arrived by car, bus, plane or train — take advantage of the city’s best eco-friendly quality: ample public transportation. If you prefer do-it-yourself touring to anything organized, the MUNI system and its cable cars, your own two feet and a map and/or guidebook will be all you need to explore the gorgeous city’s distinct sites and neighborhoods.
