September is a budget-friendly time to escape to Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa 14 miles from downtown San Diego. Listed on Condé Nast Traveler’s 2005-06 “Hot List” and boasting AAA’s prestigious Four Diamond Award, this is a ranch-style retreat near the beach, Torrey Pines Golf Course and UCSD but not on top of the busy boutique shopping area on Prospect Street. They are offering up to 50% off their normal rates in September.
Deal: To find the best deals, I first checked their “Value Dates” in the Specials and Packages section of their website. The lowest rates I found were $209 for Sundays in September and October. When I checked the main reservation section, I found offers of 35% off their normal rates and 50% off in September including a deluxe king room starting at $154 (Sept. 7 to 9). A veranda king room with a balcony/patio was only $170, pre-tax. To stay on a weekend (Sept. 12 to 14), there was only a 35% discount (instead of 50% off) and an estate king with either a courtyard or pool view and balcony or patio (depending on whether you’re on the ground floor or second and third floors) for $259 per night, pre-tax.
Caveat: There is a $12-a-day resort fee that includes Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, newspaper, gourmet coffee in your room and access to the business center and faxing privileges. You also get free toll free and local calls. Note: The $25-a-day valet fee is mandatory and the only method of parking your car.
