Oahu, Hawaii: Royal Hawaiian to reopen in January; $19.27 room special

Royal Hawaiian resort, Oahu, Hawaii

The Royal Hawaiian, which has been closed since June 2008 for renovation, is old-school Waikiki, having been around since 1927. We’re all curious to see the resort emerge after its multimillion-dollar facelift when it reopens its doors in late January 2009.

The Pink Palace of the Pacific, on 14 acres of beachfront now owned by Starwood, promises visitors a luxury experience complete with traditional Hawaiian leis and refreshing oshibori towels upon arrival, redone rooms with vintage accents, indigenous artworks, stone flooring in bathrooms and showers, and many more special touches and improvements.

Deal: Under the “1927 Package” (a nod to its original opening on Feb. 1, 1927), you pay just $19.27 (pre-tax) for your first night’s stay. Of course, you have to buy three more nights at luxury-hotel prices ($450 and up, per night, pre-tax), but to be among the first wave to stay in these newly redone digs, you might feel it’s worth it.

Airfare Deals: Airfarewatchdog.com just tipped me off to a seemingly sweet Los Angeles (LAX)-Honolulu (HNL) fare deal, with flights advertised starting at $231 round trip, on American Airlines. I found a mid-November flight for $253 (including tax), via CheapAir.com. Act fast — travel must be completed by Dec. 16 for the $231 fare.

More…details: The resort package includes accommodations, dinner for two at the hotel’s new Azure restaurant and two free mai tais. What’s more, the $19.27 portion of your bill will be donated by the hotel toward historical, natural and cultural preservation in Hawaii.

When: Valid for stays Feb. 1 through June 30, 2009.
