Roundup: World Heritage Site Virunga National Park overrun by rebels; Budget travel tips

Map of location of Virunga National Park

Good morning, travelers.

Democratic Republic of Congo | More than 50 rangers fled to the forest in Virunga National Park when rebels of Laurent Nkunda seized the park headquarters at Rumangabo on Sunday. Virunga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is on the border with Rwanda and Uganda. It is known for being the home of 200 of the remaining 700 mountain gorillas. Virunga National Park has a blog where they are reporting their struggle. Also, see this L.A. Times story: “Fighting escalates in Congo”.
