Roundup: Squaw Valley avalanche kills skier; Obama holidays in Kailua; after-Christmas sales

Obama on the green

Good morning. If you celebrated Christmas — or the season in general — yesterday, I hope you enjoyed the holiday. Assuming you can digest just a tad more information, here’s today’s scoop:

Tahoe news | An avalanche in the Sierras yesterday led to the death of an experienced skier. At ski and snowboarding resort Squaw Valley USA, Randall Davis was in densely wooded terrain when he got trapped under several feet of snow. Two skiers were reported missing at Mt. Rose resort. Read. “1 skier killed, 2 missing, at Tahoe ski resorts.”

Obama in Hawaii | Barack Obama and family are spending the holidays in a vacation home on Oahu’s Windward Coast, and they’re trying to keep it low-pro (undoubtedly a real challenge when you’re one very popular president-elect whom everyone loves to report on…and, uh, blog about). During the trip, Obama has, among his limited reported activities, spent time on the green and visited military families.

After-Christmas sales | Are you hitting the shopping aisles on this day-after-Christmas traditionally teeming with retail bargains? If so, travelers, note that REI is offering great deals on hiking, paddling, cycling and other outdoors gear; major department stores like JCPenney are worth exploring for bags and luggage; and if you need more distractions for the little ones on road trips, think Toys R Us, with deals of up to 60% off. Also, don’t forget to check your favorite independent retailers in your neighborhood, bound to be offering bargains today.
