Roundup: Southwest Airlines loses $120 million; pumpkin patches near L.A.; Circus Vargas is in town

 Pumpkin patches near L.A.

Good morning, travelers! Aloha Friday. I bet you are more than ready for the weekend.

Airline news | Southwest Airlines posted a $120-million loss in the third quarter. Why? Remember in the summer when Southwest looked so smart for locking in its gas prices at a lower rate? It was paying much less for fuel than the other airlines. But recently oil prices have slumped to $69.85 a barrel Thursday, and prices have fallen below what Southwest locked them in at. Los Angeles Times staff writer Peter Pae talks more about what happened to Southwest, stock growth and Continental Airline’s third-quarter loss in the article “Southwest Airlines posts first loss in 17 years.”

Family travel | Are you looking for a good pumpkin patch for the kids? There’s Lombardi Ranch in the Santa Clarita Valley and Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark. Read: “Pumpkin patches near L.A.

Circus Vargus is in town. This is the last weekend that Circus Vargas will be in Torrance at the Del Amo Mall. Then it moves on to Culver City (Oct. 23 to Nov. 3, 2008), Long Beach (Nov. 6 to Nov. 11) and San Pedro (Nov. 13 to Nov. 18). Ticket prices range from $20-$45 for adults and $15-$45 for children ages 2-10.
