Rome: 3rd International Film Festival, Oct. 22-31

Oct. 22 to 31 is Rome’s International Film Festival, a 3-year-old affair started by the city’s previous mayor but scaled down by the current more conservative administration of Gianni Alemanno.

Still, the festival brings premieres of “The Duchess” with Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes; “The Man Who Loves,” starring Monica Bellucci; and Isabelle Huppert’s “The Sea Wall.”

This year’s “Eye on the World” program focuses on the films of Brazil.  Also, Al Pacino is in town and will receive a Marc’Aurelio Acting Award for lifetime accomplishment, as will home-country favorite Gina Lollobrigida.

The venue for the festival is Rome’s 6-year-old Renzo Piano-designed Auditorium Parco della Musica, north of the historic center in the Flaminia district, a hub for contemporary architecture.

A number of exhibitions for cineastes have opened in the city as well, including “Once Upon a Time in 1948″ at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, about a pivotal year in the history of filmmaking, and a small show of original movie art by Angelo Cesselon (1922 to 1992) at the Forum&Gallery, 65 Via Baccina, 39-3403932951, through Oct. 26. Cesselon used his iconic style to design posters for Vittorio De Sica’s “Anna di Brooklyn” (above) and many others.
