‘Rocketman’ Yves Rossy crosses English Channel in homemade, jet-propelled ‘wing’

Yves Rossy of Switzerland crosses the English Channel in his jet-propelled wing

Buzz Lightyear and George Jetson, meet Swiss pilot Yves Rossy, who today (Sept. 26) crossed the English Channel in just 10 minutes with his personal homemade, jet-propelled “wing.” (The photo above was taken May 14 as a demonstration flight.)

“It was perfect. Blue sky, sunny, no clouds, perfect conditions,” Rossy told the Associated Press. “We prepared everything and it was great.”

Rossy leaped from a plane, fired up his jets and made the 22-mile trip from Calais, France, to Dover, England, for the solo flight.
