Think it’s not the likeliest of times to be seeing a new luxury hotel along the coast debut? Then prepare to be surprised. Located on more than 100 acres in Rancho Palos Verdes, the $480-million Terranea Resort throws its doors open today, boasting 580 rooms, eight restaurants, three swimming pools, a golf course, a 25,000-square-foot spa and fitness center, and an 18,000-square-foot ballroom.

As L.A. Times staff writer Roger Vincent writes, the hotel, which sits on the former grounds of Marineland of the Pacific, is “so big it can host five weddings at once.” (Read Vincent’s article for more on the opening of Terranea amid a particularly challenging environment for the hotel industry at large.)
If your curiosity is piqued but you’re not sure if you’ll be able to afford such grandeur, note the hotel’s introductory deal:
Deal: Book by June 28 to receive promotional rates on stays between now and Dec. 30. For a Thursday in June, I found a “resort view” (read: not ocean-view) king or double room for $145 per night (pretax). This price, according to the hotel’s reservations page, reflects a 25% to 50% discount and totals $185 after taxes and fees.
For a weekend in late June, I found a king room for $198 (pretax), or $244 including taxes and fees.
