Pope in D.C.; JetBlue hearts tech cities; Mexico warning

Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel

Good morning travelers! How’s your Wednesday treating you? Let’s see what we’ve got going on today. First, happy 81st birthday to Pope Benedict XVI who is celebrating at the White House and getting around D.C. in the Popemobile.
AIRLINES | Competition for West Coast flights is heating up, and the tech-heavy cities are the focus. JetBlue added routes between Long Beach (LGA) and San Jose (SJC), Seattle (SEA), and Austin, Texas (AUS). Virgin America added Seattle to its small basket of destinations. Alaska is now offering hourly flights between LAX and Seattle (SEA), and Southwest added four flights between LAX and San Francisco (SFO). Does this mean passengers will hop between one airline to the next depending on who has the best prices that week? What will you do?

MEXICO | The U.S. State Department updated its travel alert on Mexico. LA Plaza, the Los Angeles Times Latin America blog, gives the backstory on the drug war behind the warnings.

LOCAL | Did you know that the Santa Monica Ferris wheel is up for sale on eBay? Asking price is $50,000. A new 1.5-million modern model is coming in next month. Speaking of the Santa Monica Pier, the Green Apple Festival is coming to the pier for Earth Day, April 20, 2008.
