Pismo Beach: Labor Day family deal at the Cliffs Resort

Pismo Beach

Last year, I was in Pismo Beach, California, during Labor Day weekend, and it proved a fun getaway — just a few hours drive north of Los Angeles yet psychologically far enough to feel like a vacation. It being a holiday, much of the beach was rife with sandcastles and suntans, and the line for Splash Cafe (the place in town for clam chowder) was discouragingly long at all hours.

But if you want family-friendly fun and don’t demand tranquility (good luck finding it that weekend anyway), this casual Central Coast beach town can be a fine place to spend a few festive days.

Deal: The Cliffs Resort’s Labor Day package includes the following for $779 (pre-tax): three nights accommodations; breakfast buffet for four people each morning; and four BBQ lunches throughout the weekend (two lunches included on Saturday and two on Sunday). In addition, things kick off on Friday evening with a wine tasting and a taco bar at this seaside resort, and the festivities will carry over to the weekend at large, with live music planned.

Speaking of music, if you’d like to catch the San Luis Obispo Symphony’s Pops by the Sea on Sunday, Aug. 31, just add $80 (for a total of $859) to your Cliffs Resort package. That will get you a shuttle to Avila Beach for the performance and tickets for two, with preferred seating and lunch. Call to reserve this package.

When: Friday, Aug. 29, to Monday, Sept. 1, 2008

Connect/disconnect: All rooms are equipped with wireless Internet. The $7 per night resort fee that you’ll be charged covers this and parking.
