Hotel Chatter has a fun Tuesday feature called “Good Rate/ Bad Rate.” They take a look at one city and compare hotel prices, pinpointing beds to avoid as well as those worthy of your hard-earned travel dollars. This week they put Palm Springs under the microscope. Though posh and loved for great people-watching, Le Parker Meridien ($345) and Hilton Palms Resort ($235) didn’t make the cut. So, are there any good-value rooms in the desert during peak season?
Deals: Ballantines Original Hotel, known for their 1950s-themed rooms with mid-century modern furniture, was selected as HotelChatter’s good rate. They found the $109 “Shop and Stay” special. But it gets even better, if you’re willing to gamble. Call the hotel and ask for the Manager’s Special—it’s $99/night. Here’s how it works: Tell them the name of the room you want. If someone else pays full price for that room, they’ll pick another room for you. Ballantine tries to give you the best room they can on the day you arrive. And they’re proud of all 14 of their rooms.
When: The “Shop and Stay” special is good Sunday through Thursday all year.
More…Details: Taxes and fees are additional. The African 1950s and Audrey Hepburn rooms are even cheaper mid-week, starting at $99/night. Have a look at their website. They disclose all the rates through the year, and you can look ahead to see which season (and weather forecast) is right for you. Suites are not included in the Manager’s Special.
