Orbitz sale offers some good, some great hotel deals

San Diego Embarcadero

Orbitz has recently launched its Winter Escape Sale, offering purported savings of up to half off of hotel rooms in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

If you’re thinking about a weekender in San Diego soon, you might consider booking Feb. 20-22 at the Kings Inn, located in the convenient (but admittedly uncharming) Hotel Circle. Reserve it through the Orbitz special and you’ll pay just $128 total for the two nights.

Deal or no deal? Orbitz calls this a discount of 45%, but note that the discount is off rack rates, which the hotel itself won’t even be charging you. If you go through the hotel directly, you’ll pay $146 total for that weekend. That means you save $18 by booking through Orbitz — not quite 45%, but every dollar counts these days, right? And a room in San Diego for $64 a night is certainly a good deal.

Here are a few other items of possible interest advertised under the Orbitz sale; prices are pre-tax, unless noted:

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach: This is the best deal I dug up in my brief perusal of sale offerings. Through Orbitz, get a long-weekend stay (Feb. 19-22 is what I searched) for $99 per night for a room with two double beds; that’s $340 total, after taxes, for the three nights. Booking through Hyatt’s website will cost you $600 total.

Hotel Whitcomb, San Francisco: For the period of March 6-9, Orbitz offers a rate of $169 per night, while the hotel offers a $189 per night rate.

Custom Hotel, Los Angeles: For three nights — I tested Feb. 13-16 — you can get a room at this hotel near LAX for $90 per night through Orbitz, or $116 per night through the hotel’s website. It’s your call.

When: Book your discounted rooms by March 29 for stays now through May 31, 2009.
