Have you ever heard of Great Lakes Airlines? Me either. But they’re coming to Ontario (ONT) and additional flight options are a welcome change to news of canceled flights and airline cutbacks. Great Lakes Airlines will begin service between Ontario and Visalia and Merced in California, and Prescott and Phoenix in Arizona as of Sept. 8, 2008.
I tested booking some flights via the Great Lakes Airlines website and found reasonably priced flights.
Ontario (ONT) to Prescott (PRC): A round-trip weekend flight (Sept. 26-29) was $143, including taxes on Great Lakes Airlines. The price was $178 out of LAX on Alaska Airlines and more than $300 out of Burbank. Note: Horizon Air will start daily service to Prescott out of LAX Sept. 8, 2008.
Ontario (ONT) to Visalia (VIS): I found flights for $79 each way (pre-tax) on various dates in September.
Ontario (ONT) to Merced (MCE): I found flights for $109 each way (pre-tax) on various dates in September.
Caveat: In order to fly Ontario to Phoenix (PHX) and book online, you need to buy two round-trip tickets. Ontario to Prescott, and Prescott to Phoenix.
More info on Great Lakes Airlines: They provide service in 14 states at 50 airports. They use Embraer EMB-120 Brasilias and Raytheon/Beechcraft 1900D regional airliners.
