Did you know that Oklahoma has a larger Native American population than any other state in the U.S.? I didn’t, but thanks to one of the My Daily Escape e-mails that I received this week from the Away Network, I’m now a little wiser. In fact, according to 50states.com, Oklahoma’s state flag “honors more than 60 groups of Native Americans and their ancestors.”
From Friday, June 6, to Sunday, June 8, 2008, over 100 tribes will be celebrating together at the 22nd Red Earth Festival, a major cultural event filled with music, arts, crafts, shopping and food in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Also included on the schedule are a parade, dance performances, contests, a 5K run and a 2K fun run.
Tickets: A three-day weekend pass costs $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $15 for children (6-17 years old); one-day passes are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $7.50 for children.
Bonus: Consider what you’re saving by going to Oklahoma, as opposed to, well, Hawaii. As L.A. Times staff writer Mary Forgione reported in a recent blog post, Oklahoma City is one of the vacation destinations rated as least expensive by AAA’s 2008 Vacation Costs Survey.

I was disappointed in not seeing anything in Sunday’s Oklahoman in regard to the dates of Red Earth Festival. I had intended to attend the Friday session. I also would like to be able to see a list of activities and times posted on this site. This makes planning much better!
