Oahu, Hawaii: Dance in the streets at Hallowbaloo

Hallowbaloo

A recent Twitter tweet informed us about the upcoming Hallowbaloo in Honolulu, Hawaii, a free open-air street festival that sounds to me like a great excuse to get over to the islands.

On Halloween night, the party begins in the early evening with Arts District galleries open late for trick-or-treating. The festival’s three stages will offer an array of music, including African drumming, a cabaret, folk-rock artist Brett Dennen, the voodoo-bluesy Papa Mali, and Grateful Dead co-founder Bill Kreutzmann. Costume and jack-o-lantern contests are also scheduled. The free live music on the streets will go until 10:30 p.m.; afterward, you can go see ticketed concerts at area venues, with acts including Maceo Parker and DJ Logic; Mad Professor Ariwa Dub Posse; and the Helio Sequence.

When: Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, 5:30 p.m. onwards

Traveling from Los Angeles: If you want to fly in for the event (and, of course, spend at least a few days enjoying Oahu before and/or after), the website mentions that discounts are available through Happy Vacations, Go! Airlines, Aqua and Outrigger Hotels.

I tried the booking engine accessible from the event’s website but ended up finding the cheapest package price on this one by going through CheapTickets: There, I got a rate of $602 per person (including taxes; based on double occupancy) for four nights in Honolulu, departing Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Thursday, Oct. 30, and returning Monday, Nov. 3, with nonstop Delta flights and a stay at Aqua Continental. By contrast, through the Hallowbaloo website, I got a rate of $620 per person.
