New Year’s Eve in New York City + Times Square

The Big Apple might not be the first (geographically speaking) to enter into the year 2008, but the countdown at Times Square is decidedly the best place in the world to ring in the New Year. TRANSPORTATION AND ACCOMMODATION:

Flight from LAX-JFK: About $500 round trip including taxes on multiple airlines via Kayak.

Flight + hotel package: $1,237 on Orbitz including taxes for a nonstop flight + two-night hotel package at the three-star Hotel Mayfair just steps away from Times Square. If two people are going, the price drops to $939 per person or $879 per person if you accept a layover in Vegas.

Hotel for Dec. 31-Jan. 2 near Times Square: On these nights, it’s not about how much, but who’s open. There are still rooms available at the three-star Paramount. The bill comes to $839 including taxes for both days. If you want to stay at the Hilton and look down on all the action, the price comes to $1,421 for both days including taxes and fees. Trip Advisor’s No.1-rated New York City hotel, Casablanca, is already sold out.

Where to watch the ball drop: Broadway and 7th Avenue from W. 43rd to W. 51st streets.

Brooklyn Fireworks display: Grand Army Plaza on Prospect Park’s West Drive and Prospect Park West between Grand Army Plaza and 9th Street.

10th annual New Year’s Eve Bike Ride: Washington Square Park (10:30 p.m.), Madison Square Park (10:50 p.m.) or 59th Street and 5th Avenue (11:15 p.m.).
