New Orleans snowfall prompts storm warning, flight delays

Snow in Louisiana

In what seems an unusual move for Mother Nature, heavy snow has fallen upon New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. The event has prompted a winter storm warning by the National Weather Service, and many schools, government offices and bridges have been closed, according to the Associated Press. Thousands of homes and business have also been left without power.

St. Tammany Parish, in the New Orleans metro area, experienced four hours of snowfall this morning, according to the Times-Picayune. This was the area’s first snowfall since December 2004.

Some flights at Louis Armstrong International Airport, outside of New Orleans, experienced delays. If you’re traveling to or from the airport today, contact your airline for the latest on flight status.

Weather is also affecting travel in other parts of the country. In Houston, flights were significantly delayed last night due to the de-icing of planes, according to the Associated Press article “Southeast Texas battles ice and snow.”
